Cable Modem vs DSL

Cable modems work over your cable television service line. Your cable service must offer Internet access service in addition to your normal television access. However, most cable companies will allow you to purchase Internet access without subscribing to their cable TV service. Prices for the Internet service can vary greatly from one cable company to another but it's generally $30 to $40 a month (plus the cost of the cable modem.)

DSL Internet access occurs over your phone service lines. This service is generally not as available as cable. It may or may not be available to you depending on your phone company,  location of phone company equipment, and quality of phone service lines. Prices we've seen for DSL service range from $40 to $50 per month (plus the cost of the DSL modem.) BE CAREFUL of package signup specials which may include a cancellation fee.

Some companies, to get your business, will provide rebates and discounts on the modems for either of these services.

You may be asking, why get either of these services if you already have a dial-up Internet service provider? There are several advantages. You could free up your phone line or eliminate the cost of a second phone line. If you download large files, you'll notice a GREAT difference in how long downloads take. And you won't have to wait for a connection to be made.

Whichever high-speed Internet service you use, these connections can leave you more vulnerable to 'break-ins' on your computer because of the 'always-on' connection. We recommend using ZoneAlarm as an effective firewall
